Tricking a Search Engine

Do you find yourself looking up information from shady sources that explain “The Secret” for catapulting your way to the top of  search engine? Are you looking for the easy way to the top? Well, stop.

I don’t want to say that you shouldn’t optimize the use of your limited resources; however, people seem to often refer to tactics with nice adjectives like “sneaky” or “sly” when they should really be called dishonest or unethical. I see this the most when people are just starting a SEO campaign and they churn out garbage content stuffed with keywords. This is all done in the hopes of tricking search engines to overvalue your page. For those of you that do this, it might be time to take a personal inventory. You may want to ask yourself, “am I smarter and do I have more resources than all of the search industry professionals out there that are backed by millions and millions of dollars?” I would say “no” and eventually they will catch up to your shallow game and your efforts will not provide anything enduring.

On the other hand, what if you created some content that was valuable to search engines and people alike? With search engines becoming better and better at determining page relevancy, you could say that they are becoming more human-link. So, how can you guess what the next algorithm update will be like? Likely it will more and more match what a really person would like.

So, plan for the future. Write for people.
