Are You Supporting R Movies by Watching Other Movies?

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

I don’t watch rated “R” movies. However, I’m fine with watching edited rated “R” movies. For example, the movie Love Actually is rated “R”. I haven’t seen the original version but I am a big fan of the edited version. It is something that I would be glad to recommend to my parents.

Not too long ago, my wife and I invited some friends to watch one of our edited movies. They politely declined our offer. I sensed that there was a good opportunity to have an interesting discussion, so I pressed the point and asked why. They responded by saying that they did not watch rated “R” movies in any form because they did not want to support the producers of such movies in any way. We talked a little but about it but it was pretty much left at that.

Today, however, I looked into it and Disney, probably considered the most child-safe movie producer, owns Touchstone Pictures and Miramax. Both of these companies produce rated “R” movies. So, are you not supporting producers of rated “R” movies by simply not watching those movies? Not necessarily.

On a business note: if you like edited movies and are disappointed by the court order to shut down CleanFlicks, you can get those same movies at FamilyFocusFilms.org for a limited time.
