Tom Love

I attended a lecture today that had Tom Love of Love Communications on as a guest speaker. Tom is a very personable individual, fun and inspiring to listen to, and obviously passionate about what he does. I though that Eric Jacobsen put it nicely when he said “when I first met Tom I thought that he was my best friend. Now that I’ve known him for a while, I realize that Tom has 30,000 other best friends!” I think that really says something for Tom’s ability in relating with people on an individual level. He definitely lives up to his name sake.

Here are a few of my notes from Tom Love’s lecture:

The heart must first be captured in a marketing campaign because then the mind will rationalize in favor of what the heart wants.

Success is in the palm of your hand:

  1. Thumbs up (thumb) - Be positive. Put a smile on your face and be fun to work with.
  2. Point to your goal (pointer finger) - Identify your goals of life. Have a win every day.
  3. Give fear the finger (middle finger) - Fear is debilitating. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said “do the thing you fear and the death of fear is certain.” (I am a big fan of this quote. This quote is what I wrote in a climbers log that was left on the top of Mt. Moran, the second highest mountain in the Grand Tetons.)
  4. March forth (ring finger) - Take action.
  5. Remember the little things (pinkie finger) - Remember birthdays and anniversaries, give thanks, stay decent.

Phil Night (Nike CEO and founder) developed a shoe. To market the shoe he would approach sport teams and give his shoe for free to the fastest runner. People would see his shoes on the fastest athlete and think “I’ve got to get those shoes. They’ll make me fast too.” This a great lesson in building your brand equity by borrowing from the brand equity of others.

When you are a manager and and employee come to you and is freaking out with a serious problem, wait 24 hours. Most of those problems will take care of themselves.
